Allustan, long-suffering mentor

There are only two kinds of people who are really fascinating; people who know absolutely everything, and people who know absolutely nothing.

He knows everything.

Allustan could be considered "the patient patron" for our fledgling adventurers. He studied magic in the Free City in his youth, and was quite good at not only the art itself, but at the jockeying for position that accompanies wizard guild politics. He grew tired of the backstabbing, and retired to Diamond Lake as a sage, not so much for the money but because he was interested in the questions people would ask a sage. Why Diamond Lake, though? We really don't know that much about Allustan's past. Hmmm...

Thomas's parents apprenticed him to Allustan, assuring their son he is one of the best...though the young diviner has his doubts at times, slogging through the muddy and ill-kept streets of the small mining town, running errands for his master. Allustan may not be the merely mild-mannered scholar he appears to be, however; remember, Thomas learned all his spells of combat prowess and fiery destruction from his mentor.

Allustan has borne many indignities on behalf of his apprentice's new companions, having housed a captive necromancer in his parlor, rescued hostages in his frontroom, an owlbear in his garden (a most distressing time, as Allustan is quite proud of his well-maintained garden), and an endless parade of strange antiquities, rusty remnants, and other assorted items found in various quests and capers. Of this latter condition, Allustan is not so peturbed; potentially priceless relics delivered to his study on an almost daily basis? Not a bad racket. He knew he kept an apprentice around for something...

Allustan travelled with the party to Blackwall Keep after receiving a letter from an old friend; upon discovering the keep was under siege, he teleported away to get reinforcements, leaving the young adventurers to deal with dozens of lizardfolk.  The party rescued his friend Marzena, with whom it was later revealed he once had a perhaps more intimate relationship.  They had a falling out, though, which seems like par for the course, as Allustan refuses to talk of his mentor, to whom he no longer speaks.   All aquaintances the party has questioned likewise decline to divulge any information on the matter, and the true identity of the calm, quiet wizard's teacher is a mystery that remains unsolved.
